Since 2000, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Red Wolf Recovery Program has used reproductive sterilization of coyotes to mitigate coyote introgression in the wild red wolf genome and increase the Eastern North Carolina Red Wolf Population. Consequently, coyote introgression in the wild red wolf genome was <4% and the combination of sterilization and red wolf presence reduced coyote abundance to densities less than most estimates reported throughout the coyotes geographic range. Here, I will discuss how the presence of red wolves and federal management of coyote using fertility control may have limited coyote densities in northeastern North Carolina.
